I was about 19 years old and had been dating this guy off and on since I was 15. It is important that you should know that when I was 18 he had asked me to marry him and I had said no. My parents had gotten married at 19 and were now divorced and I was afraid of giving in to love only to be left behind one day. Don invited me to go camping with him up at a KOA near the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. I had no clue about camping but said yes. He had all the necessary supplies (tent, sleeping bags, pillows, camp stove, Coleman lantern, and food). Since I was kind of useless he did everything. He set up the tent, cooked, and built us a fire at night. During the day we would go hiking and tubing down the river. At night we would sit by the fire and play cards. I never thought I would have fallen in love with camping and the outdoors as much as I did. Not to sound corny but I suddenly realized how much I loved this guy and I was willing to give some serious thought to having a future with him.
My dad used to take us camping to the same camp ground when we were little! I also love camping but since my father passed away 8 years ago I haven't gone since. Thanks for sharing your stories with us. I need to know if your'e married him?
ReplyDeleteI hope that one day you will return to camping and reminisce about the fun times you had with your dad. You will find as I add to my blog that we tend to go back to the same area where my husbands family would take him as a boy. His dad past away when he was 12 and it is great to hear him tell me and the boys the stories of the good times they had together.
DeleteI went camping at the KOA near Traverse City! although we didn't use a tent, we rented one of those cabins that they have. I really liked it. I liked having a bonfire every night and going on hikes. I'm really interested to see how your blog turns out! I must know, is this guy the same one you are married to with 2 children?!! You can't leave all of us reading this blog on a cliff hanger like that! :) (i'm kind of a sap for romance ... )
ReplyDeleteSorry to leave you hanging but check out my next blog and you will get your answer.
DeleteThis is such an awesome story...I have never been camping and I am not sure if I ever will. It kind of freaks me out to be honest haha
ReplyDeleteI love camping. My family use to go camping with my parents best friends and their family since I was 3 years old. It was our annual family vacation and I always looked forward to it! We stopped when I was about 12 because it was too hard to coordinate with everyone's schedules. When I was 18 my four siblings and I started going again and brought our friends and it's not the same as when I was younger but we still have a blast. Thanks for sharing your story!
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing! Congratulations! I'm glad that you found someone who you can share your love of camping with. The sleeping bear dunes are so much fun! They have lots of great little stops on the side of the road up in those parts.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment.
